▼ Cloning and Expression
In yeast, Krr1 is a component of a ribonucleoprotein required for biogenesis of the 18S rRNA. By database analysis, Bernstein et al. (2004) identified human KRR1.
By searching a human database for sequences similar to Drosophila dribble (dbe), Chan et al. (2001) identified the human ortholog, KRR1. Dribble and KRR1 share highest similarity in their ribonucleoprotein K (HNRNPK; 600712) homology (KH) domains. In Drosophila, dribble localized to the nucleus, and in some cell types to a subregion of the nucleolus.
▼ Gene Function
Chan et al. (2001) found that dribble was required for survival of dividing cells during Drosophila development. Dribble mutants showed a defect in rRNA processing and accumulated abnormal rRNA precursors.
▼ Mapping
Hartz (2009) mapped the KRR1 gene to chromosome 12q21.2 based on an alignment of the KRR1 sequence (GenBank U00943) with the genomic sequence (build 36.1).
