▼ Description
CCDC63 is a dynein complex protein that appears to play a role in spermiogenesis (Young et al., 2015).
▼ Cloning and Expression
By database analysis, Pazour et al. (2006) identified human CCDC63 as an ortholog of Chlamydomonas Oda5.
Using RT-PCR of mouse tissues, Young et al. (2015) detected strong expression of Ccdc63 in testis, with lower expression in brain, thymus, and lung. Ccdc63 was first expressed in mouse testis at 3 weeks of age, indicating that Ccdc63 is incorporated into the dynein complex at a later stage of spermatogenesis.
▼ Mapping
Gross (2018) mapped the CCDC63 gene to chromosome 12q24.11 based on an alignment of the CCDC63 sequence (GenBank BC073147) with the genomic sequence (GRCh38).
▼ Animal Model
Young et al. (2015) generated Ccdc63-knockout mice using the CRISPR/Cas9 system. Male Ccdc63-knockout mice were infertile. Ccdc63-knockout sperm had shortened tails, malformed heads, and no accessory structures, but they were able to fertilize eggs through intracytoplasmic injection.
