Simonson et al. (1994) identified a rat cDNA encoding the transporter Slc22a7, which they called Nlt for 'novel liver-specific transport protein.' The predicted Slc22a7 protein contains 12 transmembrane domains and has transporter-specific motifs. Slc22a7 is preferentially expressed in liver, with lower expression in kidney. Studies on the developing liver indicated that Slc22a7 transcripts are present at a very low level from gestation days 19 through 21, with a 4- to 5-fold increase within 2 weeks after birth. Slc22a7 protein is located in the sinusoidal membranes of hepatocytes. The sinusoidal membranes of hepatocytes are continuously involved in the bidirectional transport of organic anions.
Sekine et al. (1998) found that rat Slc22a7, which they called Oat2, shares 42% amino acid sequence identity with the renal multispecific organic anion transporter Oat1 (SLC22A6; 607582).
By screening human liver and kidney cDNA libraries, Sun et al. (2001) cloned SLC22A7. The deduced protein contains 546 amino acids. Sun et al. (2001) identified a splice variant resulting in a 538-amino acid protein with a different C-terminal segment. Northern blot analysis detected transcripts of 2.4 and 3 kb in liver and kidney, with higher expression in liver.

Sekine et al. (1998) demonstrated that Slc22a7 expressed in Xenopus oocytes mediates the uptake of organic anions such as salicylate, acetylsalicylate, prostaglandin E2, dicarboxylates, and p-aminohippurate. Salicylate uptake was saturable and sodium-independent. Sekine et al. (1998) concluded that Slc22a7 is a multispecific organic anion transporter of the liver.
By radiation hybrid mapping, Kok et al. (2000) mapped the human SLC22A7 gene to 6p21.2-p21.1.
